DYANNE THORNE
Loved by gorehounds, despised by critics, the movies of the Ilsa series stand in a class all by themselves.
Drawn directly from the blouse-straining pulp magazines in the 1950s, the sweetheart of the swastika — Ilsa, as played by thrustingly top-heavy Dyanne Thorne — is an icon for a select section of the male world. The first of the series, Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS, brings Thorne to the screen as the Black Widow, a femme commandant of a concentration camp who likes to cut the fun parts off male prisoners the morning after having had her « fun » with them. It could also have been titled She Wolf Of The Double D. The entire film could have been taken from the lurid covers of the magazines that barbers kept in their shops in the ’50s, compete with sex-flavored cruel and unusual punishments.
Vincent Canby of the august New York Times called Ilsa « the worst soft-core sex-and-violence film of the decade… and the funniest. » No special mention was made of Thorne’s 44-inch chest, but Canby couldn’t have missed it/them. And they were a powerful draw.
Two years after the first Ilsa, director Don Edmonds presented Ilsa, Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks. This was another outstanding opportunity for Thorne to dust off her tits, whips and chains and have another batch of hapless prisoners. Fans of the Nazi version lapped up this second outing, complete with its modern Middle East locale: so many evil slavers, so little time. The roles were a personal revelation for Thorne, a former burlesque dancer: « Maybe I’m becoming Ilsa, » she said. « I’ve always been covering up my strengths. There’s something that’s been aching to express itself. »

Adorés par les fans de divertissement sanglants, méprisés par les critiques, les films de la série Ilsa se démarquent tous seuls.
Tirée directement des magazines de pâte à crampons dans les années 1950, la chérie de la croix gammée – Ilsa, telle que jouée par Dyanne Thorne, très puissante, est une icône pour une section sélectionnée du monde masculin. Le premier de la série, Ilsa, La Louve des SS, amène Thorne à l’écran en tant que Veuve Noire, une femme commandant d’un camp de concentration qui aime couper les parties intimes des prisonniers masculins le matin après s’être « amusée » avec eux. Il aurait également pu s’intituler La Louve au 115D. Le film entier aurait pu être tiré des couvertures sinistres des magazines que les barbiers gardaient dans leurs magasins dans les années 50, en concurrence avec des punitions cruelles et inhabituelles à saveur sexuelle.
Vincent Canby du New York Times d’août a affublé le film Ilsa « De pire film sexuel et violent de la décennie … et le plus drôle. » Aucune mention spéciale n’a été faite de la poitrine de Thorne de 115D, mais Canby ne pouvait pas les avoir manqués. Et ils étaient un tirage puissant.
Deux ans après le premier Ilsa, le réalisateur Don Edmonds a présenté Ilsa, Gardienne du Harem. C’était une autre occasion exceptionnelle pour Thorne de dépoussiérer ses seins, ses fouets et ses chaînes et d’avoir un autre lot de prisonniers malheureux. Les fans de la version nazie ont profité de cette deuxième sortie, avec son lieu moderne du Moyen-Orient: temps d’esclavagistes maléfiques. Les rôles ont été une révélation personnelle pour Thorne, une ancienne danseuse burlesque: « Peut-être que je deviens Ilsa« , a-t-elle déclaré. « J’ai toujours dissimulé mes forces. Il y a quelque chose qui fait mal à s’exprimer. »
